IT BEGINS WITH YOU
TBS NEW DIRECTION Mentoring Program (TBSND) is uniquely designed to provide effective—integrated and accessible services to support the youth and their families in marginalized communities of color most prone to gun and gang violence. Ultimately our goal is to positively influence the outcomes of systems impacting their life to achieve ‘complete, constructive, change’.
Over the past 5 years, gang violence in New York City—specifically the Bronx area, has grown exponentially. According to statistics, 92 percent of young people between ages 15 and 24 were killed with guns across the nation. New York City, witnessed an uptick in gun and gang violence within the last year with shootings up nearly 29% compared to the same time last year. In the borough of the Bronx, that number is up by nearly three-fourths, with over 269 incidents this year so far. In an effort to keep our communities safe, US Attorney Merrick Garland has vowed to “investigate and disrupt the networks that channel crime and guns into our communities with tragic consequences”.
TBSND believes that in order to effectively accomplish this it must be a shared, collective effort and commitment comprised of community leaders, politicians, police and former gang members to keep our communities safe.”
